Green Algae
Green algae (Chlorophyta) are microalgae found in fresh water, saline water, alpine snowfields, or in dry land. A component of theirs, astaxanthin, has important applications in the nutraceutical, cosmetics, food, and feed industries due to its strong antioxidant activity for humans and animals. The high amount of astaxanthin is present in the resting cells of algae, which are produced and rapidly accumulated when the environmental conditions become unfavorable for normal cell growth. Examples of such conditions include bright light, high salinity, and low availability of nutrients.
Depending on the growth phase of algae, different parts of light spectrum are needed to induce efficient development of astaxanthin. Cosyfarmer’s spectra have been found to significantly boost this process and help create high concentration of this substance.
